Week #5

In our usual weird way of connecting with great growers, we have found a Mennonite group out of California that sent us some oranges and lemons to put up against our Thorpes products coming out of Florida.

The varieties from California LOOK a lot more like what you would see in the store. I have spent the better part of two weeks learning everything I can about oranges and lemons and why some look some way and others look another way...and why they taste this way vs. that way etc.

Here is what the consensus GENERALLY is...Florida are juicers, California are eaters... meaning, they are EASIER to peel and make less of a mess. Flavors preferences differ for each eater, so who is to say what TASTES better?

All I know is, in the dead of Ohio winter, with temps in the single diggies, I’ll take that pure citrus any way I can get it...drink it, eat it, rub it, sniff it...gimme those vit-a-mins!!

In the meantime, we have begun our conversations with growers for what we are expecting in 2022!! Let’s just say this...”We Ain’t Got NO Stinking Supply Chain Issues!”

Your foodshed is safe, secure, and satisfying. Fear not, and order at will.

Hold onto your snow booties this week my friends.

We are always about all things yellow...except when that yellow thing is snow.

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
