You can’t BEET the PEPPER’s, but aren’t the EGGPLANTS just DANDE?


LETTUCE MIX it up a BEET” was a close runner-up for opening line this week.

Don’t look now but it’s basically August.  That means a lot of transition is happening...back to school, back to practices, BACK TO THE FUTURE marathons.  (sometimes I just type free associations to see where they go...I’m going to leave this one because I like BACK TO THE FUTURE)

Couple event’s

1.  THIS FRIDAY evening.  Chef Meagan (was the executive chef at Kenyon, Chef de Cuisine at New Albany Country Club) will have her food trailer at my farm in Mount Vernon.  This is Yellowbird Food all the way.

Beets

Storage:   Remove the leaves and store Beets in a plastic bag in the crisper of the
refrigerator; they will keep at least a week. If storing the greens, they will stay fresh
1-3 days refrigerated.

Storage:    The best place to store eggplant is at room temperature, where it's likely to last longer. Keep eggplant in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, and use it as soon as possible after harvesting.

Storage:  Keep at room temperature on the counter away from sunlight.

Storage:   To store jalapenos place them in a container and keep them in the refrigerator.

Mustard Mix

Storage:   Rinse well, wrap in a damp paper towel and place in a container and refrigerate. If the towel is kept moist, greens can last up to one week.

Daikon Radishes

Storage:    Daikons will last up to 2 weeks stored in the fridge in container or wrapped in damp towel in fridge. Their greens should be stored separately.

Lettuce Mix

Storage:  Put your lettuce into a nice big bowl, and drape a paper towel or two over the top so moisture doesn't settle on the leaves while your salad sits in the fridge. Cover the whole thing with a really tight seal of beeswax wrap, and store.

English Burpless Cucumbers

Storage:   Wrap the cucumber in beeswax wrap. Keeping the cucumber wrapped minimizes the amount of moisture on the cucumber, which slows the process of decay. After wrapping, put the cucumber in the refrigerator. This should keep it cold enough to stay fresh for one week to 10 days.

Bell Peppers

Storage:   Refrigerate peppers, unwashed, in a container in the vegetable drawer. Keep them dry, as moisture will eventually cause them to rot.

Storage:   Store in a cool dark place away from your potatoes.

Storage:   Refrigerate in a tightly sealed container.

Blueberries

Storage:   The paper towel will help soak up moisture and prevent mold from developing. Store the blueberries in the refrigerator. Avoid keeping them in the coldest part of the fridge, or they will get damaged from the cold. The best place to store the berries is on the middle or bottom shelf.

Storage:   Place in a glass of water in your refrigerator. Change out the water every few days.
